As evening falls, the silhouettes of surfers stand out against an orange sun sinking straight into the Atlantic: that is the scene that sums up Dakar's Corniche Ouest. Over a few kilometres, between the tip of Almadies and the Plateau, three beaches, Ngor, Ouakam and Yoff, each offer a radically different atmosphere.
One corniche, three atmospheres
The Corniche Ouest runs along the Atlantic front of the Cap-Vert peninsula, from the village of Ngor to the edge of the city centre. It is not a single beach but a string of coves and bays, each with its own character: Ngor for its island feel and family bathing, Ouakam for its spectacular setting beneath the cliffs, Yoff for surfing and neighbourhood life. You can string them together in half a day by car, or choose to explore just one in depth.
Ngor: the island, the legendary surf and family bathing
The village of Ngor gives access to two worlds: the mainland beach, calm and popular with families, and Ngor Island, five minutes away by pirogue (allow 1,000 to 1,500 FCFA one way, price to be confirmed on the spot). On the island, the "Ngor Right" wave is known to surfers the world over, while the bay on the south side offers calmer water, ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

Ouakam: the beach beneath the Mosque of the Divinity
A little further south, Ouakam is striking for its setting: a beach nestled beneath cliffs, dominated by the white silhouette of the Mosque of the Divinity. Bathing is permitted and supervised here, which makes it a good compromise between the spectacular scenery and safety. The spot stays quieter than Yoff, with a few street vendors and Senegalese families who come to spend their Sunday here.
The late-afternoon light on the Ouakam cliffs is particularly photogenic: aim to arrive two hours before sunset.
Yoff: the Senegalese surfers' spot
Yoff Virage is the beating heart of Dakar surfing: this is where most local surfers train, in a friendly atmosphere, with bars and sun-lounger rentals nearby. The waves here are generally more forgiving than at Ouakam or on the Ngor Right, which makes it a good spot for beginners, but the rocks breaking the surface along some stretches call for caution.
Yoff beach is not continuously supervised and some areas are rocky: ordinary bathing, outside supervised surfing, is less advisable here than at Ouakam.

How to get there from central Dakar
The three beaches link up easily along the Corniche Ouest, but Dakar traffic at rush hour (7am-9:30am and 5pm-7:30pm) can turn a 20-minute drive into an hour. For a half-day with no constraints on schedule or parking, renting a car with a driver in Dakar remains the most comfortable option, as the driver knows the shortcuts between Almadies and the Plateau.
